Nottingham Forest beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Monday to stretch its Premier League unbeaten run to seven matches. The result moved Forest six points clear of West Ham in 18th place and restored a five-point edge over Tottenham Hotspur in 17th.

The victory came over the bank holiday weekend, which also saw wins for Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur. Forest, Spurs and West Ham—all at risk of the third and final relegation spot—have lost just one of their past nine Premier League games between them.

This survival fight has delivered twists, controversy and key moments like those in a title race. West Ham learned that lesson Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Brentford. Poor results now draw sharp punishment from rivals.

Teams near the drop zone have raised their quality. For the first time since the 2015-16 season, a Premier League side will go down with 36 points or more.

Journalist Rory Smith said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club: "Someone is going down with a lot of points, that is the reality of it. In the last two seasons, the bottom three didn't crack 30 points."

Smith added: "They have all responded when the pressure has been really high. They have all found form. Since the game against Manchester City in November, Leeds have been upper-mid-table in terms of form. Forest have come good a little bit later on. And Spurs and West Ham—although they are the two in danger—one of them will go down with a lot more points than any team for quite a long time."

A season of three managerial changes at the City Ground has left Forest owing much to Vitor Pereira if it survives. The 57-year-old replaced Sean Dyche in February and has lost only two of nine Premier League matches in charge. His team went unbeaten against Manchester City, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Sunderland and Chelsea.

Forest has scored 12 goals and conceded two in its past three games, lifting its goal difference from minus-12 to minus-2. That swing could prove worth an extra point.

Tottenham followed its first Premier League win of 2026 last week with a victory over a much-changed Aston Villa on Sunday. The result lifted last season's Europa League winners out of the bottom three and ahead of West Ham after three matchdays in the relegation zone.

Former Manchester City and Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given said on Monday Night Club: "It's so tight now. It's between two, realistically. The rest are home and dry. Maybe not mathematically, but they are done and dusted."

Given continued: "It's a huge week for Tottenham. Forget about the tactics, forget about the managers, forget about the boardroom. It's about the result. It's three points—the lift that will give the lads. Imagine them going into training today. A few weeks back, the Spurs stadium has been nearly empty towards the end of games. You could see them in the away end yesterday—the place was rocking."

West Ham sits precarious despite gains. The club has lost four of 14 Premier League matches since back-to-back defeats in January. Yet history warns it may be too late. West Ham holds the mark for most points in a relegated side's final eight games (15).

Newcastle United, the last team relegated with 36 or more points, had the longest end-of-season unbeaten run (six games) by a side dropping to the Championship.

Opta data gives West Ham a 77.71% chance of relegation, Tottenham 22.03% and Forest 0.13%. At current rates—West Ham at 1.03 points per game (projected 39 points), Tottenham at 1.06 (40 points) and Forest at 46—the Hammers would fall to the second tier for the first time since 2011.

Smith noted: "West Ham had been the form team out of the three clubs. Until the Brentford game, you looked at them and thought, 'Nuno Espirito Santo has got a really strong tactical discipline there and has shaped them into a proper team'. They looked totally doomed in January but Nuno took them from that and managed to craft a bit of an identity. So Saturday came as a real shock—against a team that hadn't won in eight games."
