A district court judge in Lubbock, Texas, will hear arguments Monday afternoon on a request by Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby for an injunction that would allow him to play this season despite admitting to thousands of bets over the past four years.

Sorsby, who transferred to Texas Tech in January, is currently ineligible under NCAA rules after placing at least 2,900 wagers totaling more than $30,000 while at Indiana. Court documents show he bet on his own team at least 40 times during the 2022 season, with individual wagers ranging from $1 to $114.

The 111-page filing states that Sorsby placed $90,000 in bets across four years while at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech. He used accounts on FanDuel, Underdog, Hard Rock Bet and PrizePicks, and transferred at least $60,000 to friends who placed bets on his behalf on the NBA, PGA Tour, MLB and college football.

Sorsby said he stopped betting on Indiana games before his first appearance and only bet on the Hoosiers to win. He also said he continued gambling after arriving at Texas Tech, using friends' accounts and sending them $5,000 to place bets on professional sports.

In the filing, Sorsby described losing more than he won and said the money involved was not significant to him because of his NIL earnings. He recently completed a 35-day stay at a rehabilitation clinic in Arizona.

Texas Tech has asked the NCAA to impose a two-game suspension instead of barring Sorsby for the season. The school argued that a career-ending penalty would discourage other athletes from seeking treatment for gambling problems.

Sorsby's attorneys contend the NCAA has used his addiction against him rather than supporting his recovery. The NCAA learned of the violations through a tip and began its investigation before Sorsby disclosed the activity.

A ruling from the Lubbock court could determine whether Sorsby is eligible for the 2025 season.
