Nantes-Toulouse Match Abandoned After Ultras Storm Pitch
It took just 22 minutes for chaos to erupt at the Stade de la Beaujoire on Sunday.
A French football match descended into a riot, forcing players to flee for their lives. The Ligue 1 clash between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC was abruptly abandoned.
A large group of hooded Nantes supporters breached stadium security, stormed the pitch and turned the arena into a war zone. The score was tied at 0-0 when the violence began.
Dozens of angry Nantes fans, upset over their team’s poor season, overwhelmed stewards and smashed through security barriers. Clad in black and concealing their faces, the rioters hurled flares and pyrotechnics onto the playing surface.
Terrified players from both teams sprinted down the tunnel to the safety of the locker rooms as the pitch was overrun. Riot police in tactical gear marched onto the field to restore order.
After a tense standoff, police pushed the invading supporters back into the stands. Refereeing officials and local authorities determined that player safety could no longer be guaranteed, and the match was called off.
France’s Minister of Sports, Marina Ferrari, condemned the rioters on social media, calling the pitch invasion unacceptable.
French football officials now face pressure to address the country’s hooliganism problem. Nantes is expected to face severe punishments.
