Furyk Open to Tiger Woods Role on 2027 Ryder Cup Staff After DUI Arrest
Tiger Woods' future in golf remains unclear after his March DUI arrest, but U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk said he wants Woods on his 2027 staff.
Woods was in a two-car accident on Jupiter Island, Florida, on March 27. Police charged him with two misdemeanors: DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Breathalyzer tests showed 0.00 on both samples, but Woods refused a urine test, leading to the charges.
This marks Woods' second DUI-related arrest. Officers found him asleep in his car in May 2017 and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Four days after the accident, Woods said he would step away from golf to seek treatment and focus on his health. He received permission to leave the United States for treatment.
Ahead of the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, Furyk said he has not spoken to Woods since the arrest. "We haven’t spoken yet. I think, out of kind of courtesy for him and his family and I know maybe a road to health, I haven’t reached out, but I will," Furyk said.
Asked if Woods would have a role on the staff, Furyk replied, "Definitely. We’ll see where that role may fall." He added, "I will say I enjoyed serving – I use that word serving – as a vice-captain with him a number of times. I think he brought a lot to the team room and a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience."
Woods was the top choice to captain the U.S. team in 2025 at Bethpage Black but turned it down. He was also considered for 2027 at Adare Manor in Ireland. The accident led the PGA of America to name Furyk instead.
Furyk captained the U.S. team in the 2018 Ryder Cup, where Europe won 17.5-10.5. He aims to move past that loss and win the Americans' first Ryder Cup on foreign soil since 1993.
The 2027 Ryder Cup starts Sept. 17.
