Novak Djokovic and Joao Fonseca produced a five-set French Open classic that lasted almost five hours.

Djokovic, 39, led by two sets but could not hold off the 19-year-old Brazilian, who sealed the win with an ace on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Djokovic said he ran out of gas and praised Fonseca's level. "He played lights-out tennis," Djokovic said.

Fonseca's forehand and serve proved decisive. He fired three aces from a break down in the final set to finish the match.

Djokovic had looked likely to advance after taking a two-set lead and holding break points at 4-3 in the fourth set.

The loss ends his chance to claim a record 25th major title this year, with Jannik Sinner already out and Carlos Alcaraz injured.

Djokovic said he felt his game was strong but Fonseca was simply better. He will now prepare for Wimbledon, where he has won seven titles.

Fonseca's win drew loud support from Brazilian fans inside the stadium. He is the first Brazilian man to reach the fourth round at Roland Garros since Gustavo Kuerten.

Kuerten won the last Grand Slam singles title for a Brazilian man in 2001.

Fonseca now faces the possibility of a first-time major champion at this year's French Open.
