Cubs Pitcher Matthew Boyd Out with Knee Injury from Playing with Kids
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd will miss significant time after injuring his left meniscus while sitting down to play with his kids.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said before Wednesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds that the 35-year-old needs surgery for the knee injury. "It’s kind of unexplainable," Counsell said.
The Cubs placed Boyd on the 15-day injured list that day. No return date has been set.
Boyd last pitched for Chicago on May 3 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in an 8-4 win. He allowed four hits and two earned runs over six innings. He had been slated to start Friday in the opener of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers.
Counsell had no immediate replacement in mind. "I’m not even there yet," he said, according to MLB.com, when asked about the rotation spot. "[We’ll] just kind of figure out after Thursday what we will do. There will be plans, but very loose plans."
The Cubs have 10 pitchers on the injured list as of Thursday: Shelby Miller, Ethan Roberts, Cade Horton, Jordan Wicks, Hunter Harvey, Porter Hodge, Caleb Thielbar, Riley Martin, Justin Steele and Boyd.
Chicago has won despite the depleted bullpen. The team walked off the Reds in three straight games, won eight in a row overall and took 14 straight at Wrigley Field.
