Southampton Beats Middlesbrough 2-1 in Extra Time Amid EFL Spying Charge
Southampton defeated Middlesbrough 2-1 in extra time at St Mary's Stadium, with Shea Charles scoring the winner via a cross-shot in the closing stages. The victory should send the Saints to Wembley for the Championship play-off final against Hull City on May 23.
But uncertainty hangs over the result after Southampton was charged by the EFL with spying at Middlesbrough's Rockliffe Park training ground last Thursday. The club has not denied the allegation and requested more time for an internal review. Normally allowed 14 days to respond, Southampton now faces an EFL push for the earliest possible hearing before an independent disciplinary commission.
A commission spokesperson said Tuesday that it is following due legal process, with no timescales confirmed. Possible punishments include a fine, points deduction or expulsion from the playoffs. In this, the 40th season of the playoffs, the tie could become the first decided by a disciplinary panel rather than players.
The off-field drama muted post-match celebrations Tuesday despite the stakes. No fans invaded the pitch at the final whistle, and supporters left quickly. Middlesbrough players head back to Teesside on Wednesday, but their season might not be over.
After Saturday's goalless first leg, Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg condemned the alleged spying. "There's someone who makes decisions to go and try to cheat," he said.
Following the loss, the Swede, in his first English job after 15 years coaching, spoke emotionally about preparing videos of Southampton at the expense of family time. "If we hadn't caught that man that they sent up five hours to drive, you would sit there and say well done in the tactical aspect of the game and I would go home and feel like I've failed," Hellberg said. "When that is taken away from you—we're not going to watch every game, we're going to send someone instead and film the sessions and hope they don't get caught—it breaks my heart in terms of all the things I believe in."
Middlesbrough led on the night and aggregate through Riley McGree's early goal. Ross Stewart equalized for Southampton before halftime. The Saints then dominated as Boro tired, though Charles' shot needed a deflection to win it.
Hellberg noted his team's resource disadvantages. "When I took the Middlesbrough job, I know there are clubs with bigger resources, parachute teams that can spend more money, that are teams with bigger squads than us," he said. "What you have as a coach is the tactical element of the game and where we can beat the opponent."
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert guided his side to a 21-match unbeaten league run and one game from promotion. But he faced questions over the spying claim. "It's not easy for me, I would say something but it is not the moment," Eckert said. "This whole matter is overshadowing two games that are an advert for the Championship from both teams. I hope that the way we speak about that gives credit to the quality of both games and when the investigation is closed I will say something. We do understand the seriousness of the matter. That's all there is to say at the minute."
