South Walton High School Wins Florida State Title on Suicide Squeeze
A high school baseball game in Fort Myers produced one of the rarest plays in the sport. South Walton High School won the Florida state championship with a suicide squeeze bunt and the bases loaded in a tie game.
The bunt scored the winning run and ended the contest. A first-base coach made sure the runner touched the bag before the celebration began.
Suicide squeezes with the bases loaded are uncommon at any level. They are almost never seen in major-league games, where power hitting and strikeouts dominate. The play remains part of high school strategy, where small-ball tactics still decide championships.
