Rain Forces Indy 500 Qualifying to Single Day on Sunday
Rain washed out the first day of Indianapolis 500 qualifying on Saturday, forcing IndyCar to move the entire session to Sunday.
The original plan called for the first day to set starting positions 16 through 33. The top 15 cars would advance to Sunday, with the fastest nine advancing automatically to a top-12 round and the cars in positions 10 through 15 running again to complete the top 12. The top six from that round would then move to the Firestone Fast Six to compete for the pole.
With the schedule now condensed, the top-15 step has been dropped. The field will run a standard top-12 round followed by the Firestone Fast Six.
Each driver will now have only one run to reach the top 12, increasing the pressure on the field. Last year’s polesitter, Robert Swartzman, is not competing this year.
Qualifying is scheduled to begin at noon ET on FS2, with Scott Dixon first out after Friday’s draw. The top 12 and Firestone Fast Six will air on Fox starting at 4 p.m. ET.
