Oilers Fire Coach Kris Knoblauch After Back-to-Back Cup Finals
The Edmonton Oilers fired head coach Kris Knoblauch after the team's back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2024 and 2025. Knoblauch's dismissal came amid reports that the Vegas Golden Knights blocked the Oilers from interviewing Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy.
The decision signals the front office's determination to superstar Connor McDavid as he begins a new two-year contract. The Oilers have about one year to show McDavid their championship window remains open. Knoblauch coached McDavid in juniors and took over midway through the 2023-24 season. He guided the team to the Cup Final, where they lost to the Florida Panthers.
Florida beat Edmonton again in the 2025 Final. This season, the Oilers fell in the first round to the Anaheim Ducks. In past years, a coach with Knoblauch's record might have earned another season to chase a title. NHL teams now make bolder coaching changes.
Coaching ranked below the Oilers' deeper issues, especially lack of depth throughout the McDavid era. McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and defenseman Evan Bouchard produced big numbers. McDavid led the league with 138 points this season, Draisaitl had 97 and Bouchard 95. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins followed with 57, the next highest total.
Edmonton needs more scoring beyond its stars since McDavid plays just 22 minutes per game. Strong goaltending could offset that, but it has not. Top goalie Connor Ingraham posted a .899 save percentage and 2.60 goals-against average this season.
Knoblauch's exit, and any pursuit of Cassidy or Craig Berube, marks a summer of changes. McDavid will watch closely.
