When Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz close in on goal, teams rarely escape.

Atalanta, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and most Bundesliga sides have felt the force of Europe's top front line. Since teaming up in August, Kane, Diaz and Olise have scored more than 100 goals across all competitions for Bayern Munich. They rank as the fifth trio to reach that total since 2000.

The feat stands out as Bayern eyes the DFB Pokal and Champions League alongside the Bundesliga title it clinched last month. BBC Sport reviews the numbers ahead of Wednesday's Champions League semifinal second leg against Paris Saint-Germain. Bayern trails 5-4 after the first leg.

Three-man forward lines have marked football history. They gained traction over the past 15 years, thanks in large part to Barcelona under Pep Guardiola from 2008 to 2012. Guardiola's side took two Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles with a possession game that blended midfield and attack.

The system featured a clear No. 9 but demanded fluidity in and out of possession. Lionel Messi, a nine-time Ballon d'Or winner, often played central up top but dropped deep to pull defenders or overload midfield. The approach proved nearly unbreakable and delivered 14 trophies in Guardiola's tenure.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain later adopted similar setups. In the Premier League, Liverpool's Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah mirrored it most closely. Over five seasons at Anfield, Firmino linked play from a central role, much like Messi, to open lanes for Mane and Salah. The group powered Jurgen Klopp to major trophies and rates among England's best.

Bayern Munich now commands envy across Europe. The club signed Kane, Olise and Diaz over consecutive summers since 2023 to build the continent's deadliest attack. Each scored in last week's Champions League semifinal first leg against PSG, a first for a German front three in one season.

Bayern came close before. Gerd Muller, Uli Hoeness and Willi Hoffmann tallied 99 goals in 1972-73. Trios topping 100 remain scarce. Since 2013-14, it has happened five times, three from one group.

Barcelona's Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar led with 122, 131 and 111 goals over three straight seasons from 2014-15 to 2016-17. Real Madrid's Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema hit 100 in 2014-15. Liverpool's Salah, Firmino and Mane reached 91 in 2017-18.

Paris Saint-Germain once had Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe up top. Luis Enrique now favors Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for the 2025 Champions League final. That trio trails Bayern's output but disrupts defenses through pace and invention.

Last season, Dembele scored 33, Goncalo Ramos 18 and Bradley Barcola 21 for PSG's top marks at 72 total. Doue had 15, Kvaratskhelia seven and Dembele 33 for 55 combined. This term, Doue (12), Kvaratskhelia (18) and Dembele (18) total 48 against Bayern's 101.

Bayern deploys Diaz on the left, Olise on the right and Kane through the middle for steady results. Enrique's PSG rotates positions and shines in big matches.
