Actor Brendan Fraser Named Honorary Starter for Indianapolis 500
Friday marked Fast Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where teams and drivers revved engines ahead of qualifying weekend. Rain delayed the on-track action, but IMS announced a key update: actor Brendan Fraser will serve as honorary starter for this year's Indianapolis 500.
IMS revealed the news while crews waited for the weather to clear. Fraser, born in Indianapolis, stars in the upcoming film "Pressure" as General Dwight D. Eisenhower during the hours before the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
IndyCar and IMS President Doug Boles said Fraser fits perfectly for the role at a race tied to American and Memorial Day weekend traditions. "Brendan stars in a movie about one of the most pivotal moments in World War II," Boles said in a statement. "His presence atop the flag stand is fitting as we honor the service and sacrifice of our military heroes on Memorial Day Weekend and prepare for another iconic edition of the world’s greatest race."
"Brendan was also born in the Circle City, and we’re incredibly excited to give him a warm Hoosier welcome as he returns for ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.’"
Fraser gained fame for his roles in the "Mummy" franchise and recently won an Academy Award for "The Whale" in 2022. Qualifying runs Saturday and Sunday, with the 110th Indianapolis 500 set for Sunday, May 24, starting at 10 a.m. ET on Fox.
