UCLA Ranks No. 6 in 2027 Recruiting Class Despite 3-9 Season
College football recruiting never stops, but offseason talk ramps up. May rankings of verbal commitments offer a strong hint of final standings come winter, though raw numbers alone do not tell the full story.
Name, image and likeness rules have reshaped college sports. Top-10 spots in May look good, but deeper analysis matters. Familiar powerhouses like Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Miami lead their 2027 classes. UCLA Bruins stand out at No. 6 on the 247Sports composite rankings after a 3-9 season that cost coach DeShaun Foster his job. They rank 11th on Rivals.
Boosters appear to have shifted funds from basketball to football NIL efforts. New coach Bob Chesney, with his winning record, has lifted spirits. A top-10 finish would mark just the second time for UCLA since modern rankings took hold, after 2013.
Penn State coach James Franklin drew heat after a loss to UCLA. The Bruins hold 18 commits for 2027, with 10 four-stars. That pushes their blue-chip ratio above 50%, a solid benchmark for contenders. Three top-100 prospects bolster the group.
High commitment totals limit upside. Classes with 11 or 12 pledges have more space to add elite talent. UCLA's average sits at 89.85. They would need top-100 or near-five-star additions to hold position.
USC provides contrast with 13 commits but ranks No. 4, two spots ahead. The Trojans post a 93.39 average, 3.5 points better than UCLA. Last cycle, a 25-commit class near that mark ended 13th at Washington. Top-five '26 classes averaged 91.90 or higher. USC claims twice as many top-100 pledges and one five-star.
Data favors USC in a top-10 race between the Los Angeles schools. UCLA could surge with summer pickups from elite targets. A strong debut season under Chesney might help them climb.
Odds lean against it given their early progress. NIL rules speed up deals and shift timelines. History points to a top-15 finish, still a leap from UCLA's struggles over the past decade.
