The third round of the US PGA Championship lived up to its billing as moving day, with 14 players holding at least a share of the lead at some point and 30 players within five shots of surprise leader Alex Smalley.

Smalley shot a two-under 68 to reach six under par at Aronimink. The field tightened after the PGA of America moved some tees forward and made several pin positions more accessible, producing a classic major leaderboard that mixes top players with lesser-known names.

Rory McIlroy improved from a first-round 74 to a 66 on Saturday and sits at three under. Justin Rose shot 65 to reach two under, while Jon Rahm carded 67 and stands two shots off the lead.

Aaron Rai, Ludvig Aberg, Nick Taylor and Matti Schmid are all at four under. Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, shot 71 and is five shots behind.
