Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu provisionally suspended after three missed drug tests
Romanian gymnastics star Ana Barbosu has been provisionally suspended after missing three drug tests, the International Testing Agency announced Thursday.
The 19-year-old committed three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period, according to the announcement.
Barbosu plans to take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. She addressed the matter on social media after the ITA's announcement.
"I wanted to share and clarify some information that has been circulating," she posted on her Instagram story.
"As you can imagine, moving to the US and starting college (at Stanford within the last year) has been a big transition. Navigating through all the changes has been challenging, and I’m continuing to learn and grow through each experience. To be clear, this situation has nothing to do with prohibited substances, and I have been grateful for the guidance and support throughout the process."
Barbosu received the bronze medal in floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Olympics following a series of score changes and appeals.
She thought she had secured the medal after Jordan Chiles' initial score. A U.S. coach then appealed, and Barbosu was holding a Romanian flag when she saw the scoring adjustment that placed Chiles ahead.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport later ruled that the event's judging panel had wrongly allowed the inquiry boosting Chiles' score. The appeal came after the one-minute deadline and should not have been accepted.
The International Olympic Committee subsequently required Chiles to return her Paris Olympics floor exercise bronze medal due to the improper judging.
Chiles and Team USA have appealed that decision.
