PSG Beat Bayern Munich to Reach Champions League Final Against Arsenal
Luis Enrique's skill at rebuilding both team culture and performance leaves Arsenal facing a complete challenge in the Champions League final against Paris St-Germain.
Bayern Munich fans unfurled a giant banner reading "Shoot us into the final" in a charged atmosphere on Wednesday as their team sought to overturn a 5-4 deficit from the first leg in Paris. PSG responded in the third minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia sped down the wing and set up Ousmane Dembele to fire a shot high past Manuel Neuer.
Harry Kane's stoppage-time goal for Bayern offered no real consolation. PSG soon celebrated reaching a second successive final and a chance to defend the title they claimed last season with a 5-0 win over Inter Milan.
Luis Enrique danced on the Allianz Arena pitch, repeating his celebration from the 2025 final. Arsenal reach their first Champions League final in 20 years but face a huge test on May 30 in Hungary against Mikel Arteta's counterpart, the master strategist who rebuilt PSG.
Enrique took over a dysfunctional squad centered on Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. He demanded players check their egos or leave. The result blends top individual talent with intense work rate and defensive strength.
Captain Marquinhos, who joined PSG from Roma in 2013, survived the changes as a professional defender. He paired effectively with Willian Pacho to limit Kane until the late strike.
Kvaratskhelia and Dembele created the decisive goal, while 20-year-old Desire Doue troubled Bayern repeatedly in the second half. Marquinhos anchored the defense at age 31 with precise positioning and calm leadership.
Midfielders Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz and Joao Neves drove the team. Ruiz delivered a fine pass for Dembele's goal before handling defensive duties as Enrique requires.
Ex-Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock told BBC Match of the Day: "It is very difficult to look past PSG as winners in Budapest. They are so strong in every area. The only weakness I really see in the team is their goalkeeper Matvei Safonov."
Warnock added: "One of the issues Arsenal will have is trying to contain the PSG full-backs. That means asking Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard, who will probably be on the wings, to then contain the full-backs and stick with them, and also go the other way and attack them as well. It is going to be very difficult for Arsenal to keep this PSG side out because you can't sit back against them for long periods of time. The one thing you'd say is that, if you sit off them, then Bradley Barcola, Doue and Kvaratskhelia are good enough in one-v-one situations, with Dembele as well, to be able to beat you individually. Whichever way you look at them, they are a brilliant team and you struggle to find any weakness. You look right through the pitch and think 'where is the weakness?'"
PSG showed their range in the 6-5 aggregate win over Bayern: attacking flair in Paris, then disciplined defense in Munich. They repeated the formula against Liverpool in the quarterfinals, winning 4-0 on aggregate after triumphing at Anfield for a second straight season.
Dembele, once a misfit at Barcelona, celebrated a tackle with the same joy as his goal, capturing the team's shift under Enrique. Bayern pushed hard with fervent support but met a superior side under Vincent Kompany.
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, on TNT Sports, said: "A couple of years ago they had prima donnas, egos in the team but [Luis Enrique] wasn't having it. He pushed them aside and built a team on work-rate and principles. This team could dominate for years to come. They are that good."
PSG players maintained their effort to the final whistle, blocking every Bayern threat. Arsenal must breach this European-leading team in Budapest.
