Preakness Stakes Draws 14 Horses, Largest Field in 15 Years
The Preakness Stakes draws its largest field in 15 years Saturday with 14 horses competing in the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown series for 3-year-olds.
Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo, trained by a woman for the first time in the race's history, skips the Preakness. That marks the third time in five years the Derby victor has passed on the Preakness. No horse can sweep the Triple Crown, which also includes the Belmont Stakes in New York.
Iron Honor enters as the 9-2 morning-line favorite for the 1 3/16-mile race at Laurel Park in post-position draw Monday. Odds will shift as betting continues before the 7:01 p.m. ET post time.
The field by post position and morning-line odds:
1. Taj Mahal, 5-1
2. Ocelli, 6-1
3. Crupper, 30-1
4. Robusta, 30-1
5. Talkin, 20-1
6. Chip Honcho, 5-1
7. The Hell We Did, 15-1
8. Bull by the Horns, 30-1
9. Iron Honor, 9-2
10. Napoleon Solo, 8-1
11. Corona de Oro, 30-1
12. Incredibolt, 5-1
13. Great White, 15-1
14. Pretty Boy Miah, 15-1
The last 14-horse Preakness came in 2011, when Shackleford beat Derby winner Animal Kingdom by half a length. This year's race moves temporarily to Laurel Park, between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, while Pimlico Race Course undergoes redevelopment. The Preakness should return to a rebuilt Pimlico next year.
Iron Honor sat out the Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The bay colt won February's Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York City but finished seventh in last month's Wood Memorial there, behind Preakness rivals Ocelli (third) and Napoleon Solo (fifth).
Jockey Flavien Prat rides Iron Honor, his fourth Preakness mount. The 33-year-old won in 2021 with Rombauer, took third in 2024 with Catching Freedom and fourth last year with Goal Oriented.
Trainer Chad Brown seeks a third Preakness win after Early Voting in 2022 and Cloud Computing in 2017.
Chip Honcho, Incredibolt and Taj Mahal share 5-1 morning-line odds behind Iron Honor.
Brittany Russell could make history with Taj Mahal two weeks after Cherie DeVaux trained Derby winner Golden Tempo. Russell would be the 17th woman to saddle a Preakness horse and the first since Kelly Rubley's Alwaysmining finished 11th in 2019. Nancy Alberts came closest, with Magic Weisner second in 2002, three-quarters of a length behind War Emblem.
Taj Mahal stays undefeated with three wins at Laurel Park, including February's Miracle Wood Stakes and last month's Federico Tesio Stakes. The bay colt drew the No. 1 post, which risks getting boxed in early.
"You know it's funny. I said to myself, the only spot I was hoping not to be was the rail," Russell said after the draw, according to a news release. "It's OK. It's all good."
Husband Sheldon Russell, who rode Taj Mahal's three wins, takes the mount for his fourth Preakness. The 38-year-old's best finish came fifth with Chase the Chaos in 2023.
Chip Honcho skipped the Derby after fifth in March's Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. The dark bay colt won December's Gun Runner Stakes there, took second in the Risen Star on Valentine's Day and fourth in January's Lecomte Stakes.
Jose Ortiz rides Chip Honcho for his seventh Preakness. The 32-year-old partnered Early Voting to victory in 2022 and Good Magic to fourth in 2018.
Trainer Steve Asmussen sends his 18th Preakness horse. He won with Rachel Alexandra in 2009 and Curlin in 2007.
Incredibolt took sixth in the Derby, ahead of Robusta (14th) but behind Ocelli (third). The dark bay colt won March's Virginia Derby over Ocelli (sixth), October's Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs and ran last in January's Holy Bull Stakes in Florida.
Jaime Torres, Incredibolt's regular rider, seeks a second Preakness win after Seize the Grey's 2024 victory at Pimlico. Trainer Riley Mott enters his first Preakness horse; his father Bill Mott ran two, most recently Riley Tucker (12th in 2008).
Ocelli, at 6-1 odds, ran third in the Derby, sixth in the Wood Memorial, sixth in February's Sam F. Davis Stakes in Florida and sixth in the Virginia Derby.
Tyler Gaffalione rides Ocelli for his fourth Preakness after the colt's Derby third. His best prior finish was fourth with Tuscan Gold in 2024. Whit Beckman trains his first Preakness entrant.
Napoleon Solo, at 8-1, last ran the Wood Memorial (fifth in Fountain of Youth ahead of Bull by the Horns' seventh). The gray colt won October's Champagne Stakes over Talkin (second, now 20-1).
Paco Lopez rides Napoleon Solo for his second Preakness after fifth with Max Player in 2020. Chad Summers trains his first.
Great White, Pretty Boy Miah and The Hell We Did draw 15-1 odds. Bull by the Horns, Corona de Oro, Crupper and Robusta get 30-1.
