NASCAR honors Kyle Busch at Coca-Cola 600 after driver's death at 41
The NASCAR world gathered Sunday evening at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600 and to honor Kyle Busch.
Tributes have come in from across the sport over the past three days for the two-time Cup Series champion, who died last week from complications of pneumonia. Drivers observed a moment of silence earlier in the day at the Indianapolis 500.
Family members made their first public appearance since his death during pre-race ceremonies in Charlotte. Samantha Busch stood with her son Brexton on pit road, joined by Kyle Busch's brother Kurt Busch, team owner Richard Childress and NASCAR CEO Steve O'Donnell.
Bagpipes played "Amazing Grace" as those on pit road and fans in the stands raised No. 8 flags and wept.
"Every racetrack was Kyle Busch's home," O'Donnell said. "He competed like he had something to prove every single race, when in reality he had already proven everything. What I think we'll miss the most isn't the wins. It's the guy who quietly wanted to help a teammate, give some advice, the husband, the father, the guy who quietly did things for others when no one was watching."
O'Donnell also addressed the family. "Samantha, I want you to know that this sport stands with you, and you and your children are NASCAR family forever," he said. "Brexton and Lennix, your dad loves you with all his heart. Everyone gathered here, everyone behind you, everyone watching on TV and all those people up in that grandstand, they are your family and we've got you."
Fans stood during lap eight as the field passed the grandstand. Amazon Prime released a video tribute narrated by Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Kyle Busch competed in all four NASCAR national series during his career.
