James Madison football coach Billy Napier has praised the culture and infrastructure at his new program during recent speaking appearances. Fans of his former team at the University of Florida have reacted with anger to his calculated comments.

Napier said he was impressed with the established setup at James Madison. "I think typically, when you get one of these types of jobs, it's broken. There's lots of things to fix. You've got a long list of problems you have to solve," he said. "I think here we are starting on second base a little bit."

Napier served as head coach at two prior programs, including a Group of 5 team in Louisiana and then Florida. He arrived in Gainesville in late 2021. The author, who claims familiarity with the Florida program, acknowledges some infrastructure issues existed then but rejects Napier's portrayal of it as broken.

Napier's Florida teams posted one of the SEC's worst offenses. They often had fewer than 11 men on the field for special teams plays and committed errors that cost games. Florida fans have criticized these latest remarks as part of an ongoing pattern of excuses.

The backlash follows other comments from Napier this offseason, including a USA Today article defending his tenure. Florida's previous three coaches each finished above .500 and won at least a share of the SEC East. Napier did not achieve those results.
