Authorities released more details Friday about a domestic incident in Dover, Tennessee, where retired Army Special Forces veteran Craig Berry allegedly shot his wife before fleeing, triggering a large-scale manhunt involving multiple agencies.

Berry faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, domestic assault and leaving the scene of an accident. The incident occurred early Friday at the couple's home.

Stewart County Sheriff Frankie Gray told NBC News that Berry's wife, whose name authorities have not released, tried to drive away from the scene. Berry fired a shot at her vehicle, Gray said. She escaped, but Berry pursued until he crashed his car, totaling it.

The wife received hospital treatment for life-threatening injuries and has been released, according to Gray. Investigators have interviewed her several times.

Gray mentioned a possible financial situation between the couple but declined to speculate on their problems. A family member spoke by phone with Berry shortly after the shooting, the sheriff said. That relative believes Berry destroyed his phone.

The search for Berry is urgent, Gray said, though he does not expect Berry to target others. Still, he urged area residents to lock their doors, citing concerns that Berry might try to steal a vehicle to escape. The sheriff called the effort a lengthy process and did not rule out the possibility that Berry is dead.

"This is going to be a really detailed, methodical search," Gray said.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol told Fox News Digital it continues to support the Stewart County Sheriff's Office, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Marshals Service with helicopters and troopers as needed.

The U.S. Marshals Service offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to Berry's capture. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation added him to its Most Wanted list.

An Army spokesperson said Berry served as an infantryman and Special Forces Medical Sergeant from 1992 to 2016, retiring as a sergeant first class. He deployed to Iraq four times between 2003 and 2014.

Video from the Tennessee Highway Patrol showed troopers, deputies and investigators searching dense woods for Berry in the hours after the shooting. The sheriff's office warned on social media that Berry is armed and dangerous.

Deputies noted Berry is an excellent swimmer and diver in good physical shape with extensive survival training.

Stewart County Schools said on Facebook that Berry's wife is a schoolteacher.
