Rookie right fielder Carson Benge made one of the best catches of the season Sunday night, helping the slumping New York Mets secure a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Angels second baseman Vaughn Grissom hit a line drive down the first base side in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out and a runner on first. Benge laid out for the spectacular diving catch, likely saving a run and ending the Angels' chances of a comeback.

The win gave the Mets their 12th victory of the season. New York took two of three games in the series, its first series win since beating the Minnesota Twins in two games on April 23.

"I dove still not knowing," Benge told reporters after the game, via MLB.com. "But I know I was going to try to make a play for my guys."

Mets broadcaster Gary Cohen called the play "pulchritudinous," leaving Todd Zeile speechless in the booth. The word describes something breathtaking, heartbreaking or beautiful.

Benge went 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks.

Starter Clay Holmes allowed one run on four hits and struck out six batters. His ERA dropped to 1.69.
