Manchester United senior executives plan to recommend Michael Carrick to Sir Jim Ratcliffe as the club's permanent manager.

The 44-year-old former United midfielder has emerged as the top choice since he steered the team to next season's Champions League as caretaker head coach.

The club had planned to wait until the end of the season to name a successor to Ruben Amorim, who was sacked in January.

But chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox have decided Carrick is the right man for the job. They will inform Ratcliffe of their choice this week, according to The Athletic.

If minority shareholder Ratcliffe approves, United will start formal talks with Carrick to confirm his appointment.

Carrick won 10 of his 15 matches in charge, with only two losses. He lifted United from seventh to third in the Premier League table and earned a Champions League spot.

No Premier League team has earned more than the 33 points United collected since Carrick took over on January 13.

He beat title challengers Manchester City and Arsenal, winning his first four games in impressive fashion.

A seven-game unbeaten streak ended in March. But wins over Champions League contenders Aston Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool secured the return to Europe's top club competition.
