Celebrities and Elizabeth Warren Criticize Bezos Over Met Gala Role
Left-leaning celebrities and politicians criticized Monday night's Met Gala and its honorary co-chairs Jeff and Lauren Bezos, renewing attacks on the couple's wealth and sway over the event.
Actress Taraji P. Henson questioned attendees in a social media comment on a video targeting celebrities planning to go. "I am so confused by some ppl that are going. I am just like WTF ARE WE DOING!?!?!?!" she wrote.
Models Bella Hadid and Cara Delevingne liked the video. Actor Mark Ruffalo shared a clip of Amazon warehouse worker Mary Hill, 72, who said Bezos' fortune depends on employees. "If it weren’t for every associate in every Amazon facility, he wouldn’t have all those zeros behind his name," Hill said.
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren posted on Instagram that if Jeff Bezos can spend $10 million to sponsor the Met Gala, he can pay his fair share in taxes.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani skipped the event. He used social media to highlight six workers in the city's fashion industry, including seamstresses, tailors, retail workers and delivery drivers. "The fashion industry is made possible by the thousands of workers behind the scenes — seamstresses, tailors, retail workers, delivery drivers — whose immense talent and dedication deserves to be celebrated," Mamdani told The New York Times. "We’re proud to feature the stories of these hard-working New Yorkers who make our city’s fashion industry second to none."
Two of the workers were former Amazon employees, the Times reported. Mamdani's predecessor Eric Adams attended the gala once, while other mayors have skipped it in the past.
A separate event called the Ball without Billionaires took place as a workers' alternative to the Met Gala.
A Bezos representative did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital.
