Taylor Swift wedding invites spark plus-one etiquette debate
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce plan to marry on July 3. An anonymous guest told the Mail that the invitation did not include a plus-one and said the omission left the recipient reluctant to attend.
The guest said the decision appeared tied to being a single woman. The person added that attending alone would feel awkward and that few other guests would be familiar.
The complaint has prompted renewed attention to wedding etiquette on partners. Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette, now updated by great-great-granddaughter Lizzie Post, states that spouses, fiancés and live-in partners should receive invitations.
British Vogue has advised hosts to set clear rules for single guests. The guidance says that if one single guest may bring a casual partner or friend, then all single guests should receive the same option.
The episode has also drawn comment on the rising costs of large weddings and on the long-standing practice of inviting partners to such events.
