Cate Blanchett said the #MeToo movement was killed very quickly in Hollywood.

Speaking at the Cannes film festival on Sunday, Blanchett said many people with platforms can speak up with relative safety, but the average woman or person on the street who says "me too" sees the issue shut down.

Blanchett recalled a 2018 red-carpet protest at Cannes when she was jury president. She and 81 other women stood on the steps of the Palais des Festivals to represent the number of female directors selected for the competition over the years, compared with 1,866 male directors.

She said she still counts the number of women and men on film sets each day. "There's 10 women and there's 75 men every morning," Blanchett said. She added that a homogeneous workplace makes the jokes the same and affects the work.

Julianne Moore also spoke at Cannes about gender disparity on sets. She recalled being one of two women on a set around 2016 and said she has seen more women on crews in recent years.

Blanchett said she will star in director Brady Corbet's next film, an X-rated feature set in the 1970s, alongside Selena Gomez and Michael Fassbender.
