Yankees' Cam Schlittler Matches Walter Johnson Feat Not Seen in Over 100 Years
New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler notched a rare milestone in his first nine starts of the 2026 season, reaching at least 50 strikeouts while issuing fewer than 10 walks, allowing no more than one home run and posting an ERA under 1.50. He is the first pitcher to hit those benchmarks since Walter Johnson in 1913, according to Opta Stats.
Schlittler has racked up 59 strikeouts against nine walks. He has surrendered one home run with a 1.35 ERA.
In his latest outing against the Milwaukee Brewers, Schlittler allowed two hits over six innings. He struck out six and kept Milwaukee scoreless. The Yankees lost 4-3 in 10 innings.
"He’s a stud," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, via MLB.com. "He’s just a great competitor, and obviously a great pitcher. ... He settled in and obviously pitched awesome."
Schlittler stayed in the game after taking a 108.5 mph liner off him in the first inning.
The Yankees led 2-0 when Schlittler left. Milwaukee’s Jake Bauers hit a home run off Brent Headrick to cut the lead in half. Camilo Doval gave up the tying run. Fernando Cruz allowed the final two runs.
Brewers catcher William Contreras went 2-for-4 with two RBI. His sacrifice fly in the 10th scored Luis Rengifo.
Milwaukee improved to 21-16. New York fell to 26-14.
