United Flight 169 Strikes Pole and Bakery Truck on Approach to Newark
New video captures the moment a United Airlines flight from Venice, Italy, collided with a light pole and a tractor trailer while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday.
United Flight 169 struck the pole and a Schmidt Bakery truck around 2 p.m. during its descent. All 221 passengers remained unharmed, and the aircraft landed safely afterward.
Video from inside the bakery truck, which was heading from Baltimore to a company depot in New Jersey, shows the driver on the New Jersey Turnpike. The plane's landing gear and underside hit the vehicle, hurling it down the road.
The driver suffered only minor injuries from broken glass and was taken to a local hospital, said Chuck Paterakis, senior vice president of transportation and logistics and co-principal at the company.
"Upon its final approach into Newark International Airport, United flight 169 came into contact with a light pole," the airline said in a statement. "The aircraft landed safely, taxied to the gate normally and no passengers or crew were injured."
United Airlines stated that maintenance teams are checking the plane for damage and performing a full safety review. Crew members have been taken off duty pending the outcome.
New Jersey State Police told FOX Business the crash is under investigation with no further details available.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the plane hit the pole at about 2 p.m. local time and is probing the incident.
The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating. An investigator will arrive in Newark on Monday, the agency said.
"The agency has directed United Airlines to secure and provide both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder to support the investigation. A preliminary report outlining the facts and circumstances of the event is expected within 30 days," the NTSB told FOX Business in an email.
