Tuchel Names Provisional 55-Man England Squad for World Cup with Shaw, Welbeck, Scott, Alexander-Arnold
Thomas Tuchel has submitted his provisional England squad for the World Cup, with Luke Shaw, Danny Welbeck and Alex Scott among the players named.
Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has also made the preliminary list of 55 players. Fifa allowed participating nations to submit such long lists by midnight Monday for the tournament that starts June 11 in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Tuchel will now reduce the group to a final 26 players. The Football Association has not officially released the provisional squad and plans to announce the final roster on Friday, May 22.
Alexander-Arnold, Shaw, Welbeck and Scott missed Tuchel's previous squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan but remain in contention for the trip across the Atlantic next month.
Questions surround Alexander-Arnold's chances at right-back, where Tuchel faces injury problems. The former Liverpool player had seemed unlikely to make the cut, with Tuchel favoring Chelsea's Reece James, Newcastle's Tino Livramento and Arsenal's Ben White.
Last year, Tuchel said Bayer Leverkusen's Jarrell Quansah, a center-back by trade, ranked ahead of Alexander-Arnold for the spot. White is a major doubt after a knee injury in Arsenal's Sunday win at West Ham, and Livramento is currently out, though Newcastle hopes he will recover in time. James, Tuchel's top choice, has just returned from injury himself.
Manchester United left-back Shaw, who last played for England in the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain, could earn a recall. Injuries kept him out since then, but he has made 36 appearances for United this season after 34 caps.
Brighton striker Danny Welbeck has scored 14 goals this season under Fabian Hurzeler but has yet to feature in a Tuchel squad. Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott debuted for England's senior team in November but sat out the recent friendlies.
