Steve Spurrier inducted into South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame
Steve Spurrier had a busy week. On Saturday night, the former Florida and South Carolina coach walked country singer Morgan Wallen out of the tunnel at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville for the second night of Wallen's sold-out shows. Spurrier had nicknamed the stadium "The Swamp" in 1992.
On Tuesday, Spurrier was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame for his time as head coach of the Gamecocks. He finished his tenure with an 86-49 record and became the program's all-time winningest coach. His teams posted three straight 11-win seasons and three straight top-10 finishes in the AP Poll. They also held a winning record against rival Clemson during his 10 full seasons in Columbia, including a five-game winning streak from 2009 to 2013.
In his acceptance speech, Spurrier spotted Clemson coach Dabo Swinney in the crowd and brought up one of those wins. "During my eighth year here, we won number 65," Spurrier said. "And, I'd like to thank coach Dabo, his team didn't play very well that night. And I was able to win at Clemson." He later added that he was still trying to figure out how his teams beat Clemson five years in a row.
Spurrier turned 81 last month. He no longer moves as quickly as he once did on the sideline, but his wit remains sharp.
