Texas and Florida attracted the most new residents in 2023, but South Carolina saw the fastest growth rate among states as Americans moved across the country, according to the latest IRS data.

The trend points to a larger migration toward the South. People cite lower taxes, more jobs and better quality of life as reasons for the moves.

South Carolina recorded the highest per capita influx from other states, at just over 1 percent of its population. That means one new resident arrived for every 100 people already living there.

The state added more than 59,000 residents from other states between 2022 and 2023, based on IRS figures.

The migration brought more than 29,000 new tax filers and about $4.1 billion in income. New arrivals offer spending power and can fill jobs in expanding industries, which stands to aid local economies.

Texas and Florida pulled in the largest overall numbers due to their size and bigger populations. Texas topped the list with 56,473 new tax filers in 2023, with Florida close behind at 55,349.

High-cost states led by Democrats suffered the steepest losses. California dropped more than 100,000 tax filers from 2022 to 2023, and New York lost nearly 72,000.

Income followed the same pattern. California shed nearly $12 billion, and New York about $10 billion, in part as high earners left.

These changes show Americans are not only relocating but also shifting income and economic power.
