Roger Clemens questions MLB warning to Giants pitchers over Bible verses on Pride hats
Major League Baseball warned three San Francisco Giants pitchers after they wrote Bible verses on their team-issued caps during a Pride Night game.
Pitchers Landon Roupp, JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker wrote references to Genesis 9:12-16 on their hats. The league said the markings violated uniform policies.
Former pitcher Roger Clemens addressed the warnings during an appearance on The Will Cain Show. He said players routinely alter their gear without discipline.
"We alter our uniforms all the time with numbers or somebody that has passed away," Clemens said. He recalled writing the number 33 on a cap in Boston to honor Larry Bird and said he once did the same for his mother and grandmother.
Clemens said he supported the Giants pitchers. "I love it that these guys show the blessings that the Lord has given them to be out there on that field," he said. "That's the way it was for me."
He suggested MLB allow Bible verses on caps the same way it permits custom cleats. "Maybe they do something like that and guys can have a hat with a Bible verse," Clemens said.
U.S. Senator Josh Hawley sent a letter to Commissioner Rob Manfred asking the league to explain the warnings and its position on religious expression.
Clemens said players should be free to express their faith without the league pushing its own views. "Whatever floats your boat. Go for it," he said. "Don't bring your ideas towards me then too."
