Giants Front Office Open for Business Ahead of Trade Deadline
The San Francisco Giants are 30-43 and 17 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers with less than half the 2026 season played. They trail the San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals by eight games for the final wild-card berth and would also need to pass six other teams to reach that spot.
Several reports this week said the Giants' front office is open to trades. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, ESPN's Buster Olney and The Athletic all indicated the club is prepared to sell.
Feinsand and Olney named first baseman Rafael Devers, shortstop Willy Adames and third baseman Matt Chapman among the players available. Pitcher Logan Webb and several younger regulars are not expected to be offered.
Buster Posey took over as president of baseball operations in October 2024. In his first season the Giants finished 81-81. This year they are on pace for a worse record despite raising payroll from $175 million in 2024 to $210 million in 2026.
Posey's most prominent move was acquiring Devers from the Boston Red Sox. The Giants sent top prospect Kyle Harrison and outfield prospect James Tibbs III to Boston. Harrison has posted a 2.47 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 65 innings for the Milwaukee Brewers. Tibbs is hitting .305 with 19 home runs in 67 Triple-A games for the Dodgers. Devers has nine home runs, is batting .234 and has produced negative wins above replacement.
Adames signed a long-term deal before the season. He produced 4.8 wins above replacement in 2024 and 4.0 in 2025 but has been worth minus 0.3 wins above replacement in 2026 while earning $26 million annually through 2031.
The Giants' pitching staff has struggled and the farm system offers little immediate help. Several young players, including Bryce Eldridge, Josuar Gonzalez, Luis Arraez and Casey Schmitt, have contributed, but the club has been unable to build a complete roster.
