PWHL Awards Franchises to Hamilton and Las Vegas, Adds Detroit Team
The Professional Women's Hockey League announced Wednesday it will add two new teams, awarding franchises to Hamilton, Ontario, and Las Vegas.
PWHL Hamilton will play at TD Coliseum. PWHL Las Vegas will use T-Mobile Arena, home of the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights.
Hamilton has one of the world's most concentrated areas for women's and girls' hockey, the league said. Las Vegas has seen female hockey participation rise 600 percent since the Golden Knights began play in 2017.
The addition of Las Vegas extends the league's reach beyond the northern United States and Canada. Both new teams will begin play next season.
The league's Walter Cup Final between the Ottawa Charge and Montreal Victoire starts this week. It will also welcome a previously announced expansion team in Detroit.
