PK Subban pledged $10 million to the Montreal Children’s Hospital in 2015 when he was a top NHL defenseman and a face of the Montreal Canadiens, fresh off a Norris Trophy win.

A little over a year later, the Canadiens traded him to Nashville for Hall of Fame defenseman Shea Weber. Subban stuck to his commitment anyway.

The hospital announced Friday that Subban has now donated the full $10 million. The Montreal Gazette called it the biggest philanthropic commitment by an athlete in Canada.

“It was difficult. Definitely had its difficulties,” Subban said. “Was there any doubt in my mind? No, because I made a commitment that I was always gonna follow through on.”

Now an ESPN analyst, Subban spoke ahead of a Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation gala Friday. He said reaching the goal was a serious challenge, made harder by doubters.

“At 23 years old, I think for people to see somebody take on that level of responsibility breeds questions,” Subban said. “For those doubters, I hope they believe in themselves. Don’t doubt other people, just find that courage to believe in yourself, and believe that the impossible is possible, and we just proved that.”

The foundation said the donation has helped 100,000 children.
