Nielsen Data Shows Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Absent from Top 10 Streams on May 4
Nielsen data released on May 4 shows Star Wars fans streamed the three sequel trilogy movies — The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker — so little last year that none ranked in the top 10.
The measurement company tracked viewing on Disney+, which holds the franchise rights, for the holiday known as May the Fourth Be With You. Andor took the No. 1 spot. That Disney+ series aired its second and final season at the time.
Prequel movies made the top 10 list. The data also showed Millennials and Gen X viewers favored Andor over other titles. Those generations represent more than 30 years of fandom.
Disney has owned Star Wars for over a decade. The sequel films drew criticism from fans. The Rise of Skywalker performed poorly at the box office.
Box Office Theory reported last month that pre-release ticket sales point to a $71 million opening weekend for The Mandalorian and Grogu, Disney's first theatrical Star Wars release since The Rise of Skywalker. That compares to $110.5 million for Solo, adjusted for inflation to today's dollars.
