Morocco beats Scotland 1-0 in World Cup group match
After the United States beat Australia to reach the Round of 32, attention turned to Scotland, which has become a second-favorite team for many American fans at the World Cup.
The Tartan Army has drawn notice since arriving in the United States, and spirits were high for Scotland's first World Cup appearance in 28 years. The team opened with a 1-0 win over Haiti.
On Friday, Scotland faced Morocco at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Morocco had opened the tournament with a draw against Brazil.
The city turned out for the match. Supporters in kilts marched with bagpipes before kickoff, and even a duck in Providence was shown on camera wearing tartan.
Scotland fans inside the stadium sang "Flower of Scotland," but the mood shifted quickly. Morocco scored in the second minute, and that goal held up.
Scotland created late chances but could not equalize. Morocco won 1-0.
The result puts Morocco at the top of Group C. Scotland sits in second place. The Scots next play Brazil in Miami.
