Elmo backs Team USA after Knicks fans criticize his neutrality

"Just to be clear, Elmo wants Team USA to win, okay?" he said. "Elmo loves everybody. Just to be clear. Don't make this a thing. Thank you."
The statement came after fans reacted angrily to Elmo's earlier refusal to choose between the teams in the NBA Finals. The backlash recalled the frenzy around Tickle Me Elmo in the 1990s, though that episode involved excitement rather than anger.
Some observers suggested U.S. soccer fans might now adopt Elmo as a mascot, at least until results turn against the team.
