Michelle Pfeiffer Describes Harsh Filming Conditions on Yellowstone Spinoff The Madison

Michelle Pfeiffer said the cast often worked without real bathrooms, trailers or nearby food while filming scenes for the Yellowstone spinoff The Madison in Montana and Texas.

The 67-year-old actress, who plays Stacy Clyburn in the Paramount+ series, described the conditions during an appearance on the LA Times podcast In Conversation: The Madison. She said the production used open terrain that offered little shelter.

"You may as well be in a tent because, you know, there is no bathroom," Pfeiffer said. "Even the outhouse is not real. So there's no AC, there's no plumbing, there isn't anything. But it is breathtakingly glorious."

She added that the crew built a cabin quickly and could not place trailers on set because the cameras shot in every direction. "There was really no place for us to sit," she said. "There was no bathroom nearby. There was no food. And in the winter, it was cold. It was like, 'Could we have a heater?' And in the summer, it was like, 'Could I get an umbrella because the sun's really intense?' It took us about halfway through to figure all of that out."

Pfeiffer's character is the matriarch of a wealthy New York City family that moves to Montana's Madison River Valley after a tragedy. She said she took the role without a finished script and consulted Helen Mirren, who starred in the earlier Sheridan series 1923. Mirren told her the scripts and production were strong, which helped Pfeiffer commit.

The Madison reached 8 million global streaming views in its first 10 days, making it Sheridan's biggest series launch. The final three episodes of the first season aired March 21, and the show was renewed for a second season days later.
