McIlroy Says 2025 Masters Win's Emotions Top 2026 Victory
Rory McIlroy won back-to-back Masters titles in 2025 and 2026 at Augusta National, but the paths differed sharply despite the same venue, history and goal.
The six-time major champion joined Travis and Jason Kelce on their New Heights podcast and said the emotions after his 2025 victory stand alone. "I don't think anything will ever touch last year's. It's 17 years, you're waiting to do this thing and you get to the point and you wonder if it's ever going to happen," McIlroy said. "And then just the emotion and, yeah, I don't think anything will top just the euphoria of it all last year."
He called the 2026 win validation. "But I think this year was validation. Like, I proved last year that I could do it at this place, and then I go back and, you know, arguably without my best stuff," McIlroy said. "I built a really big lead over the first two days, but to get it done in the manner in which I did it -- lost the lead on Sunday, came back, played really solid to get it done. I think just validation on my part that this is where I should be. This is the level that I should be operating at."
McIlroy's 2025 success completed his career grand slam after 12 years in the Augusta spotlight. He beat Justin Rose in a playoff on his 13th attempt there.
The 2026 victory included drama too. McIlroy held a six-shot weekend lead that vanished, but he posted the field's best final-round score and won by one shot with a bogey on 18.
