Jim Miller Submits Jared Gordon in Emotional UFC Return After Son's Cancer Battle
UFC fighter Jim Miller won by submission over Jared Gordon in an emotional return to the Octagon on Saturday night at UFC 328.
Miller's 14-year-old son Wyatt faced a rare soft tissue cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma last year. Miller had not fought in the UFC for over a year while staying by his son's side during treatment. Wyatt recovered, and Miller honored him after the victory.
"My son went through some really difficult times in the last couple of months," Miller said at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. "He ended up kicking the s--- out of cancer, and he's all good today. We are cancer free. And one of the things I told him when he was dealing with it when he first got diagnosed is Millers have been called a lot of names over the years, but fragile has never been one of them."
The lightweight bout ended in the first round before home-state fans. Miller, born in Sparta near Lake Mohawk about 40 miles from Newark, caught Gordon in a guillotine choke. Gordon attempted a takedown after Miller threw a kick but kept his head down, allowing Miller to lock in the choke.
Miller now holds the UFC record with 28 wins.
