Jerry Seinfeld Jabs at 'Friends' as NBC Recycling His Show with Better-Looking Cast
Jerry Seinfeld took a jab at the sitcom Friends during a stand-up set earlier this week at the Netflix Is a Joke Festival in Los Angeles.
Speaking at the Greek Theatre, the Seinfeld creator told the crowd that NBC essentially recycled his hit show with a more attractive cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Here’s my theory on ‘Friends,’" Seinfeld said. "My show came on — ’89, ’90. ‘Friends’ came on a few years later."
"I think NBC was watching my show and went, ‘Hey, this is working pretty well. Why don’t we try the same thing with good-looking people?’" he continued. "And that was a pretty good idea. I think that kind of worked."
The audience laughed as Seinfeld delivered the punchline. It followed shouts from crowd members guessing his favorite TV series.
When one person yelled "Seinfeld," the comedian shot back, "Seinfeld? I am Seinfeld. Why would I watch ‘Seinfeld?' Would you go up to your bathroom mirror and go, ‘This is fantastic. I love this show. I’m in every episode?’"
Seinfeld mentioned Breaking Bad and Curb Your Enthusiasm before the Friends comparison went viral.
Created by Seinfeld and Larry David, Seinfeld premiered on NBC in 1989. It starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander and Michael Richards and became a classic 1990s sitcom.
NBC launched Friends five years later. The New York City ensemble comedy starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer. It premiered in September 1994 and ran for 10 seasons.
