Hospice Patient Bob Weihe Attends 80th Straight Kentucky Derby

An 89-year-old Kentucky Derby superfan in hospice care fulfilled a special wish to attend one more race.

Bob Weihe had gone to 79 Kentucky Derbies in a row. This past weekend brought the 152nd running of the race at Churchill Downs. CBS News contributor David Begnaud posted a video online seeking a ticket for Weihe.

Churchill Downs granted the Louisville native's request. On Saturday, Weihe, often confined to bed, headed out with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren seeing him off.

His wife Barbara and sons Mark and Scott accompanied him, joined by Weihe's caretaker and a family friend.

Track staff welcomed Weihe as a VIP and seated him in front of the leaderboard for a clear view of the finish line. Track president Mike Anderson gave him a personal greeting.

"I've only been here 30 years," Anderson told Weihe. "I can't imagine 80! That's terrific."

Weihe requested a program signed by the winning trainer and jockey for his collection.

The race proved historic. Cherie DeVaux became the first woman trainer to win the Derby when Golden Tempo rallied from behind to finish first.

Earlier, Weihe picked horses numbered 1, 19 and 22. Those exact horses took the top three spots: 19, 1 and 22.

Churchill Downs official Darren Rogers arranged the signatures from DeVaux and jockey Jose Ortiz.

"It's very emotional, because the Kentucky Derby is part of the fabric of the people here in Louisville, the Commonwealth of Kentucky," Rogers said. "Derby Bob is what the derby is all about."

Begnaud later brought the signed program to Weihe's home.

Barbara Weihe expressed thanks for the effort. "I'm 89 years old and have never been to the Derby like this. It's wonderful you all did so much for him," she said.
