Country singer Eric Church gave a commencement speech at the University of North Carolina that drew widespread online praise.

The 49-year-old performer spent about 10 minutes addressing graduates, structuring his remarks around six guitar strings that he linked to pillars of life: faith, family, spouse, ambition, community and you.

Church strummed his guitar throughout the address, which observers called one of the most powerful ever delivered. He attended Appalachian State University and closed with an original song, "Carolina."

On faith, Church cautioned the crowd. "Your faith will go quiet when you need it loud," he said. "Tend to your faith, now just when you’re broken, but when you’re whole."

He turned to family next. "Your family will get complicated in a way only the people who love you most can complicate things," Church said.

The singer called marriage the second-most important decision after faith. "You will go through hard seasons with your spouse," he added.

Church drew laughs discussing the G-string, which he tied to ambition. He quoted Ernest Hemingway on failure: "The world breaks everyone. Afterward, the best of us are stronger at the broken places." When you fail, he said, get back up, tune the string and keep playing.

Church also builds homes for families displaced by Hurricane Helene.
