Dwayne Johnson Wears Skirt Over Pants at Met Gala, Cites Polynesian Tradition
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson appeared at the Met Gala on Monday night wearing a skirt over his pants, drawing attention with the outfit and a multi-million dollar watch on his left wrist.
The event took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The skirt overshadowed other details and sparked widespread discussion.
Johnson, the star of "Moana 2," spoke to reporters about his choice. He said he discussed it with the team from fashion designer Thom Browne.
"I was like, look, in our culture, Polynesian culture, we rock lavalavas, we rock skirts," he said. "The most masculine men, not that I’m one of them, but the most masculine men wear lavalavas and skirts."
A lavalava is a traditional garment commonly worn by Polynesians and others in Oceanic cultures. Men wear it as school attire, business wear or police uniforms in some countries.
Johnson serves as a board member of TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of WWE. He starred in "The Smashing Machine," which earned critical praise and an Oscar nomination for best makeup and hairstyling. Emily Blunt received a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress in the film.
He is scheduled to appear in "Jumanji: Open World" later this year and "Fast Forever" in 2028.
