Colin Allred wins Democratic nomination for Texas's 33rd District
Former congressman Colin Allred is the Democratic nominee for Texas's 33rd Congressional District after defeating U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson in Tuesday's primary runoff, CBS News projects.
Neither candidate reached a majority in the March 3 primary. Allred finished first with nearly 44 percent of the vote, and Johnson placed second with more than 33 percent.
The runoff was contentious. Allred criticized Johnson's past stock trades and said she profited from companies he believes contribute to civil rights violations. Johnson attacked Allred's voting record on Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Allred said the current administration has turned ICE into a political tool. He campaigned on his North Texas roots, his record securing federal funding, and his opposition to corporate influence in politics.
Allred will face the Republican nominee in November.
