Italy's top court backs hotel that refused tap water to tourist
Italy's highest court has ruled that a five-star hotel in the Dolomites acted lawfully when it refused to serve tap water to a tourist.
The woman argued that water is a natural resource and a universal human right after a waiter at the Hotel Sassongher in Corvara offered her only €7 bottled mineral water during the 2019 ski season. She sought €2,700 in compensation for emotional distress and economic damage.
The Supreme Court rejected the claim. Silvio Belardi, the lawyer for the hotel, told Corriere Alto Adige that the court found no obligation to supply tap water.
The woman first filed the case in a lower court in Rome. Reports have not identified her or given her background.
She said the refusal violated her consumer rights and compared tap water to standard hotel amenities such as sheets on a bed or soap in the bathroom.
