Arctic Air to Bring Cold Snap and Wintry Showers to UK This Week
Arctic air will sweep across the UK this week, replacing recent spring warmth with a cold snap.
Temperatures will fall well below mid-May averages for most areas, especially from midweek. Showers will increase, with potential for heavy downpours and wintry conditions over high ground.
Strong spring sunshine and lighter winds later in the week will make it feel pleasantly warm at times.
Monday starts chilly, with early morning frost in Scotland, northern England and even southeast England. Showers will move southward, but dry and sunny spells will dominate between them.
A cool northerly wind will limit Monday temperatures to 9 to 14 C across the UK, below the mid-May average of 12 to 17 C.
Tuesday may see a slight rise, but temperatures will drop again from Wednesday as air from northern Scandinavia and the Arctic circle brings readings 3 to 7 C below average.
Low pressure will dominate, strengthening winds and showers. With colder air in place, showers over high ground in Scotland could bring snow, which is not unusual this time of year.
Daytime highs will range from 9 to 14 C, with overnight lows of 3 to 6 C. Rural areas could see chillier conditions, and gardeners should watch for ground frost.
