Yurav Premlall Wins Catalunya Championship by 14 Shots
South African golfer Yurav Premlall won the Catalunya Championship by 14 shots on Sunday, marking his first victory on the DP World Tour.
A week earlier, the 22-year-old had missed the cut by nine shots at the Turkish Airlines Open. Ranked No. 598 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Premlall opened the Catalunya with a 2-under 70 on Thursday, leaving him six shots behind the leaders despite missing four of eight cuts this season.
He fired a 64 on Friday and a 63 on Saturday to take a five-shot lead into the final round. Premlall birdied six of his first nine holes Sunday, added four more down the stretch and closed with another 63 at 28-under par total. The margin fell one shot short of Tiger Woods' record 15-shot win at the 2000 U.S. Open.
"No words," Premlall said. "I’ve worked so hard to get into this position and it’s so rewarding to finally see the results of it. I mean, the last eight, nine months have been such a struggle just to build myself onto a platform where I know I could give myself a chance to win and to end up obviously in this position. I’m just so grateful so it’s a dream come true."
Premlall's weekend rounds of 9-under 63 each would have beaten the field by four shots even if he had skipped the first two rounds. Fellow South African Shaun Norris took solo second.
