Victoria Beckham Details Strict No-Phone Family Dinner Rule
Victoria Beckham requires her family to put away phones at dinner.
The 52-year-old designer shared her strict parenting rules on the 'Aspire with Emma Grede' podcast. She said her four children with David Beckham received a very different upbringing from their parents but aimed to keep them grounded.
'I think the world is also a very different place now as to what it was when they were younger,' Beckham said. 'We've always tried to protect the children as much as we can. We've always been very close.'
She stressed that communication is key to family unity. Every night at 6 p.m., so long as neither parent is traveling, the family eats dinner together.
'We're quite a traditional family, more than people would recognize without even saying it,' she said. 'We're not on our phones, and we're all just talking about what's happened, you know, during the day. So being very close is really, really important to us.'
Beckham hopes she instilled hard work and kindness in her children. 'I think that I've always wanted to be the best mom that I could be and look after the kids, but I also feel that it's been part of my job to really help them fulfill their full potential and for them to recognize what their sense of purpose is,' she said.
For example, with son Cruz, she supported his music without pushing. 'It's never about being pushy or forcing. It's being there to support.'
Podcast host Emma Grede asked if public scrutiny affected her parenting. 'I think that it's very different parenting adult children to parenting smaller children,' Beckham replied. 'I'm just trying to do the best, the best that I can.'
She wants her children to be their best selves and feel fulfilled. Beckham also said her kids manifest, keep crystals by their beds and recognize their responsibility to do good with their public profiles.
'That's really important as well... and to be really good people. You know, the greatest compliment, as you know, is when someone will say, "I met your kids, and they were great kids."'
In an April interview with The Wall Street Journal, Beckham addressed her relationship with eldest son Brooklyn, 27, months after his public claims against his parents.
'I think that we've always — we love our children so much,' she told the outlet. 'We've always tried to be the best parents that we can be. And you know, we've been in the public eye for more than 30 years right now, and all we've ever tried to do is protect our children and love our children.'
Brooklyn sparked controversy in January with a social media statement. He accused his parents of controlling narratives to maintain a family facade. 'My wife and I do not want a life shaped by image, press, or manipulation. All we want peace, privacy and happiness for us and our future family,' he wrote.
Victoria and David also share sons Romeo, 23, and Cruz, 21, and daughter Harper, 14.
