A VAR review lasting four minutes and 11 seconds at London Stadium produced what could be the Premier League's most consequential decision since the technology's introduction in 2019.

Arsenal led 1-0 in stoppage time thanks to Leandro Trossard's 83rd-minute goal when West Ham substitute Callum Wilson scored from a corner in a crowded penalty area. West Ham players celebrated until protests led VAR Darren England to examine the play. He directed referee Chris Kavanagh to the pitchside monitor after determining West Ham's Pablo Fornals fouled Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

Kavanagh announced, "After review, West Ham number 19 committed a foul on the goalkeeper." The call nullified Wilson's goal. England also checked potential fouls by Trossard on Fornals and Declan Rice on Crysencio Summerville but prioritized the contact on Raya as the first to affect play.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta called the officials brave. "Probably today I have realised how difficult and how big a referee's job is," he said. "What a responsibility. What a big call." To BBC Radio 5 Live, he added, "It was a massive call but it was clearly the right call. My first instinct was foul... the contact affects the way David Raya lifts his hands, the way he catches the ball. It is almost on his throat. Massive decision, especially when the two teams are fighting for such big things."

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo expressed disappointment. To BBC Radio 5 Live, he said, "I did not see it quite well. I would have to see a replay but I trust a lot of what my players felt... We are so sad and we are so disappointed. I'm going to see it now and try to understand it better. It is just the lack of consistency in the last few seasons." He continued, "With the allowance of grappling, blocking, holding, I think we have lost a bit of what is a foul and what isn't a foul. Previously it would be judged differently so that's what upsets me."

The outcome strengthened Arsenal's title push. They sit five points ahead of Manchester City despite playing one more game. West Ham trail Tottenham Hotspur by one point with Spurs facing Leeds United on Monday.

England spent two minutes and 41 seconds analyzing angles before Kavanagh reviewed for one minute and 15 seconds. Pablo had his arm across Raya and held the goalkeeper's left arm, impeding a routine catch. This marked a shift from season-long tolerance of physicality on corners.

England drew scrutiny for a 2023 error that wrongly disallowed Liverpool's Luis Diaz goal at Tottenham. He has since returned to top-flight duties and will referee Saturday's FA Cup final between Manchester City and Chelsea.
